Zemsania Group collaborates with Reciclanet to promote recycling and the use of Free Software

Today, the association Reciclanet has gone to the Barcelona delegation of the Zemsania Group to promote recycling and to collect more than 50 laptops, mobiles, screens and printers that we have donated. We are very happy to collaborate with this association, which promotes the reuse of computer equipment and the use of free software.

What is Reciclanet and why is it important to promote the recycling of technological equipment?

Volunteers from Reciclanet combine the dissemination of free software with ecology and education with the aim of reducing dependence on hardware consumption. For this reason, one of their most active projects is to combine free software and reused hardware to offer a sustainable, ecological and economical alternative.

From Zemsania we would like to congratulate this association from Bilbao for their work. In addition, we encourage all companies and individuals to join in the reuse and recycling of computer equipment, computers and mobile devices.

Nowadays, it is more important than ever to be aware of the importance of reusing electronic equipment, especially after learning about the latest report from the International Telecommunication Union. According to this report, a new record was reached in 2016, with disused household appliances and IT equipment totaling a total of 45 million tons and a size equivalent to 4,500 Eiffel Towers.

In addition, it is important to note that this equipment still has great economic value. On the one hand, it is still possible to reuse them, which would avoid generating more waste and take advantage of existing material. On the other hand, the metals they contain, according to the report, would have a value of about 55 billion euros, of which only 20% are recovered through recycling.

If we look at the general level of recycling, although in Spain we are recycling more every day, we are still far below the European average. While in Spain we recycle 33% of the waste we generate, In Europe, a 45% is recycled.

From the business world, especially from technology companies, we must work to increase recycling levels (both of IT equipment and other types of waste) and promote reuse and responsible consumption.
